A Journey Through Bulnes and Cudillero

The Spanish association ‘Most Beautiful Villages of Spain’ has included Bulnes and Cudillero in its list, where some of the most beautiful places in Spanish geography can be found. As true lovers of Asturias, at Cangas Aventura we would like to take you on a tour of the most outstanding points of these special villages. Are you up for the trip?

Cudillero

Did you know that, of all the fishing villages on the Cantabrian Sea, Cudillero is the only one that can’t be seen from either land or sea? This is due to its location, within a natural bend, which means that the only way to view Cudillero is from inside the village itself. Curious to say the least!

Once inside, here are our three must-see attractions:

  • View the town from three different points. If there’s something beautiful about Cudillero, it’s the possibility to wander and get lost among its infinite corners, through which you can reach three specific points that will offer you a panoramic view of this beautiful fishing village that is not to be missed. One of them is the well-known El Picu viewpoint, another is the Casa del Fuego, and the third is the La Garita viewpoint.
  • Visit a mysterious hermitage. From Cudillero, there’s a simple and pleasant route of approximately 5 kilometers to the hermitage of Santa Ana de Montarés. Legend has it that this route has a lot to do with the original Camino de Santiago, as it is said that many pilgrims made a stop at this hermitage.
  • Enjoy its seafood cuisine. You can’t leave Cudillero without having enjoyed good fish accompanied by refreshing cider. And don’t forget to make room for dessert! The ‘natas vaquerías’ (dairy creams) are an essential tradition.

Bulnes

If anything gives charm to this village, it’s the way to reach it. Until very recently, you could only access Bulnes through a footpath, which made it quite difficult to access in winter due to snowfall. Now it’s also possible to reach Bulnes thanks to a funicular, turning the visit into an adventure even before arriving.

  • Bulnes de Arriba and Bulnes de Abajo. Once there, you’ll find these two neighborhoods (also known as El Castillo and La Villa) connected by the same path. It’s essential to see both areas, but the marvelous views offered by El Castillo are not to be missed.
  • Fairytale village. The church, the bridge over the river, and the surprise that will overwhelm you upon arrival will make you feel as if you were literally in a fairytale village.
  • Good cider by the riverside. An obligatory stop on the journey is to enjoy some good glasses of cider on the terraces by the river, which will make you feel as if you were in paradise.

Have you visited either of these two places? At Cangas Aventura, we encourage you to enjoy the Asturian landscape, whether through its villages or through the numerous activities available on our website. Get ready to live your own adventure!
