The International Sella Descent 2022
The International Sella Descent is a sporting competition that has been held every first Saturday of August since 1932. It covers the original route of the Sella Descent, between Arriondas and Ribadesella, and each year brings together thousands of paddlers who compete to make the descent in the most festive atmosphere.
But it’s not only professional paddlers who descend the Sella on this day, anyone can join the adventure in this massive event. If you enjoy the combination of competition, sport, nature, adventure, and festivities… This is a plan for you!
What is the history of the competition?
It all started with Dionisio de la Huerta. In 1929, Dionisio, born in Barcelona to a Catalan mother and Asturian father, took a canoe excursion on the Sella River with his friends Alfonso Argüelles and Manés Fernández, after successfully navigating the Piloña River. Covering 25 km in their K-2 and making multiple stops to eat was the seed that gave rise to the famous Sella Descent.
Over the years, more people joined the adventure initiated by Dionisio. In 1932, the start and finish of the descent were established in Arriondas and Ribadesella, and the first competitive edition of the event took place, which would later become the world-famous International Sella Descent. In 1951, the event became internationalized, with the participation of foreign canoeists for the first time.
Since then, this day of celebration has gained popularity and has become an event loved by both athletes and Asturians. And it’s because the International Sella Descent moves masses! Not only do those who decide to participate with their canoes attend, but also hundreds of thousands of people who come to the towns of Arriondas, Ribadesella, and surrounding areas to enjoy one of the greatest days in Asturias.
