The Sella River Descent 2019 with Cangas Aventura

Let the public be silent and listen to our word of command from Don Pelayo after measuring the waters…

It’s likely that these verses don’t sound familiar to you, right? But what if you knew they were part of the proclamation of one of the most important international canoeing events held in eastern Asturias?

The International Sella River Descent is one of the most prestigious canoeing events worldwide, celebrated in eastern Asturias. Each year, thousands of attendees gather to hear the proclamation that marks the start of this exciting competition, held on the first Saturday of August (except when it falls on August 1st or 2nd). This year, the Sella River Descent 2019 will celebrate its 83rd edition.

The origin.

The origin of this iconic race in which around a thousand paddlers from countries as diverse as South Africa or Argentina participate each year dates back to 1929, the year in which Dionisio de la Huerta proposed to his friends to take an excursion down the Piloña River from Infiesto to Coya.

After this first encounter, Dionisio convinced his friends to extend the route of the excursion: from Arriondas to Ribadesella, while a group of friends accompanied them from the road by bus. This is how, year after year, this race came to establish itself as one of the most important canoeing events, until it was recognized as a Festival of International Tourist Interest.

The competition.

The Sella River Descent covers a distance of approximately 20 kilometers between Arriondas and Ribadesella. Renowned paddlers such as Saúl Craviotto, Julio Martínez, and Walter Bouzán have competed in this race, completing the course in just over an hour.

The Canoe Festival at the Sella River Descent 2019

The Sella River Descent is not just a sporting competition, but also a grand festival declared of International Tourist Interest. The festivities include a colorful parade with bagpipes, giants, big-heads, xanas, and tritons, accompanying the paddlers to the Emilio Llamedo bridge. At 12:00, the cannon shot marks the start of the race.

This cannon shot not only signals the start for hundreds of canoeists participating, but also sets in motion a large multicolored caravan of cars and motorcycles that will accompany the paddlers until they reach Ribadesella. Not to mention the river train, which, adapting to the speed of the canoeists, will be their faithful companion until their arrival in Ribadesella.
