How to Paddle a Kayak, Pirogue, and Canoe?

Let’s start with the practical class! If you’re interested in the discipline of paddling, we’re sure you’ll find this information useful. At Cangas Aventura, we have many years of experience organizing one of the most famous activities in the country involving these types of vessels: the Sella River Descent. So… pay attention! This is what you need to know before venturing into this unique and exciting sport.

The first thing you should know is that paddling a kayak, pirogue, and canoe are water activities that, while sharing similarities, offer unique experiences, influenced by the design of the vessel and the paddling technique used.

In a kayak, the paddler sits in a low position, very close to the water, using a double-bladed paddle to propel themselves with alternating movements on both sides of the kayak, allowing for impressive maneuverability and speed, ideal for both exploring calm waters and tackling rapids.

The pirogue and canoe require single-bladed paddles and the application of techniques such as the bow stroke and the J-stroke to steer the vessel. These are perfect for calm excursions on lakes or rivers, offering stability and space for multiple people and equipment.

Understanding Your Vessel

Before diving into paddling techniques, it’s crucial to understand the differences between a kayak, a pirogue, and a canoe:

  • Paddling a kayak: generally a narrow and enclosed vessel where the paddler sits with legs extended forward, using a double-bladed paddle. Kayaks are usually for 1 or 2 people, although there are vessels that allow up to 4 people, which is the maximum. And how do you paddle a double kayak? By closely coordinating the movements of both paddlers. Additionally, kayaks, being more sporty, show more differences between their stern and bow. Notice it the next time you see one!
  • Paddling a pirogue: pirogues are longer and more open vessels than kayaks and require single-bladed pirogue paddles or oars. This, along with the fact that in a pirogue the paddler can be either seated or kneeling, is the main difference between these two vessels.
  • Paddling a canoe: canoes are essentially a type of pirogue, so there isn’t a big difference between them. A canoe is an open vessel, much heavier and wider than a kayak, although it depends on the modality for which it will be used. In a canoe, as in a pirogue, the paddler can sit or kneel, and the paddle has only one blade. Additionally, due to the materials used in its construction and its shape, it has capacity to carry many more people: 1, 2, 3, 4… As many as can fit! Lastly, take a close look because canoes usually have the same shape at both stern and bow (with some exceptions), unlike kayaks.

Essential Equipment

If you’re keen to try this discipline, regardless of the vessel, there are some essential items you should always carry with you:

  • Paddle of appropriate size and blade(s): the length of the paddle varies according to the type of vessel and your height, as well as its number of blades.
  • Life jacket: always wear a life jacket that fits your size.
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Appropriate clothing: depending on the weather, make sure to wear clothes that maintain a comfortable body temperature. Additionally, it’s recommended to bring a towel and swimwear. A good swim is always welcome!
  • Food and drink: along your paddling routes, you’ll find countless spots to stop and rest, take a dip, and recharge your energy by eating something.

Learning to Paddle in Kayak, Canoe, and Pirogue

Here are some of the tips we mention in the video. But if you want to know them all, don’t hesitate to hit play!

  • The correct posture.
    • Kayak and pirogue: sit with your back straight and your legs slightly bent forward.
    • Canoe: you can sit on the canoe bench or kneel for greater stability.
  • Grip the paddle.
    • Kayak paddling technique: hold the paddle with both hands a little wider than shoulder-width apart, keeping your wrists straight.
    • Paddling a canoe and paddling a pirogue: grip the paddle or pirogue paddle with one hand at the end of the handle and the other near the blade.
  • The paddling technique.
    • Forward stroke: this is the most basic technique and allows you to move forward. In kayaks and pirogues, alternate each side of the paddle in the water. In canoes, you’ll alternate the hands holding the paddle to maintain a straight course.
    • Turning: to change direction, take longer strokes on the opposite side of where you want to turn. You can also use techniques like the “J-stroke”, a paddle stroke that ends like a rudder, to maintain course.

Safety and Tips

  • Be aware of your surroundings: stay alert to other vessels, obstacles in the water, and weather conditions.
  • Practice in calm waters: before venturing into stronger currents or open waters, make sure you’re confident in your paddling skills.
  • Stay calm: if your vessel capsizes, stay calm and follow the recommended safety practices to get back on or swim safely to shore.

Learning to paddle in a kayak, paddle in a pirogue, or paddle in a canoe offers a unique way to explore nature and enjoy the outdoors. With proper preparation and practice, you’ll soon be gliding through the water with confidence and safety. And if not, the instructors at Cangas Aventura are there to help you in fun activities like the Sella River Descent. We hope this practical lesson has provided you with a solid foundation to start your paddling adventure!
